The Science of LED Therapy: Transforming Skin Health and Wellbeing

Discover the technology behind our advanced LED devices, built on decades of research and innovation.

From Space Missions to Skin Health Solutions

The journey of LED therapy began with NASA’s use of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in the 1990s. Originally developed to grow plants in space, NASA discovered that red and near-infrared light could stimulate cellular growth and repair in astronauts, particularly for wounds and muscle recovery during long-duration missions.

This groundbreaking discovery sparked a wave of research into LED light’s effects on human cells, leading to its application in medicine and aesthetics. Today, LED therapy is used worldwide for its ability to rejuvenate skin, treat a number of medical conditions, and promote overall wellness.

How Does LED Therapy Work?

LED therapy utilises specific wavelengths of light to penetrate the skin at various depths, triggering biochemical responses that promote healing, rejuvenation, and overall skin health. Unlike lasers or intense pulsed light (IPL) that create heat in the tissue, LED therapy is non-invasive, painless, and does not cause thermal damage to the skin.

Light photons are absorbed by chromophores in the target skin cells, stimulating mitochondria to produce more ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the energy source for cellular processes. This not only provides the cell with more energy but, through natural, complex biochemical reactions, also increases energy, accelerating cell repair and regeneration, enhancing skin and tissue health, and protecting the cell against harmful free radicals.

The Science Behind the Spectrum

At iSMART, we use four carefully selected wavelengths, each targeting
specific skin concerns and therapeutic needs:

Visible light spectrum and infrared wavelength chart with shaded colours
415nm blue light targets acne-causing bacteria on the surface of the skin, helping to reduce existing breakouts and prevent future blemishes. Its anti-inflammatory properties also help calm redness and irritation, making it an ideal option for those with acne-prone or sensitive skin.

Best for: Acne, redness, and inflammation.
630nm red light stimulates collagen and elastin production, improving skin elasticity and texture while visibly reducing fine lines and wrinkles. This wavelength supports overall skin rejuvenation, helping restore a healthy, youthful glow and helps reduce inflammation.

Best for: Anti-ageing, fine lines, wrinkles, and skin rejuvenation.

830nm near-infrared light penetrates the skin more deeply than visible wavelengths, enhancing blood flow, reducing inflammation, and accelerating tissue repair. It’s particularly effective for improving skin health from within and supporting recovery.

Best for: Anti-ageing, fine lines, wrinkles, and skin rejuvenation.

1070nm light reaches the deepest layers of the skin and underlying tissue, triggering advanced cellular repair and reducing inflammation at a systemic level. This wavelength is beneficial for addressing more severe signs of ageing, uneven pigmentation, and wound healing.

Best for: Advanced anti-ageing, pigmentation, and wound healing.

What Can LED Therapy
Do For You?

  • Anti-Aging: Reduces wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging by boosting collagen and elastin production.
  • Acne Treatment: Blue light kills acne-causing bacteria, while red light reduces inflammation.
  • Pain Relief: Near-infrared wavelengths alleviate muscle and joint pain by enhancing circulation, and cellular repair and reducing oxidative stress.
  • Improved Skin Tone: Stimulates blood flow, creating a brighter, more even complexion.
  • Wound Healing: Deep near-infrared light accelerates healing and reduces scarring.
  • Wellness: Supports overall wellbeing by improving sleep quality, reducing stress, and helping to regulate mood through light exposure’s effect on circadian rhythms.

Is LED Therapy Right for You?

LED therapy is suitable for a variety of users, including:

  • Skincare Enthusiasts: Improve skin health, reduce wrinkles, and target acne and blemishes.
  • Medical Patients: Benefit from pain relief and wound healing properties.
  • Athletes: Recover faster from muscle soreness and joint pain.
  • Professionals: Use LED therapy in clinical or salon settings for clients seeking
non-invasive treatments with no downtime and minimal risk.

However, individuals with photosensitivity, epilepsy, or pregnant individuals should consult a healthcare provider before use.
